About Azilal: Overview & What to Expect
Azilal is a mountain destination in central Morocco surrounded by valleys, waterfalls and dramatic Atlas landscapes. It is a good base for travelers interested in nature, hiking and exploring rural mountain areas.
Set in the High Atlas Mountains, Azilal serves primarily as a gateway town for exploring the dramatic natural landscapes of the surrounding province rather than as a destination in its own right. The area is best known for the Cascades d'Ouzoud, among Morocco's tallest and most impressive waterfalls, where cascading water drops over 100 meters into a canyon inhabited by Barbary macaques. Nearby, Lake Bin El Ouidane offers turquoise water framed by mountains, while the Ahansal Valley and surrounding gorges provide opportunities for hiking, canyoning and exploring traditional Amazigh villages built into the rocky terrain. The town itself is modest and functional, with most travelers using it as a base or simply passing through en route to the region's natural attractions.
