Tinghir is an oasis town in southern Morocco surrounded by palm-filled valleys and the dramatic landscapes of the High Atlas. It is best known as a gateway to the spectacular Todra Gorge and nearby mountain villages.
Located on the southern edge of the High Atlas Mountains, Tinghir is best known as the gateway to the Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon where sheer rock walls rise up to 300 meters on either side of a narrow road, popular with hikers and rock climbers. The town itself sits amid a long, lush palm oasis that stretches for kilometers along the valley floor, a striking contrast to the arid, rocky landscape surrounding it. Traditional kasbahs and ksour, many built from local pisé earth, dot the oasis and nearby hillsides, reflecting the area's Amazigh heritage. Tinghir's position also makes it a natural stop on routes connecting the Dades Valley, Merzouga and the Sahara, placing it firmly on Morocco's southern desert circuit.
