Central courtyard of the Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech with carved cedar, stucco and a rectangular pool

A Ben Youssef Madrasa ticket costs 50 MAD for adults and 10 MAD for children under 12. The madrasa is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00, and tickets are bought at the entrance.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa is the most richly decorated interior in Marrakech. It was a religious college, and its central courtyard is covered in carved cedar, stucco and tilework around a long rectangular pool. The current building dates to 1564 to 1565, when the Saadian sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib rebuilt an older Marinid foundation.

At its peak the madrasa held around 900 students in more than 100 small cells, which you can still see on the upper floor. It closed as a school in 1960 and reopened to visitors in 1982 after refurbishment. It has since been restored again.

At 50 MAD, it is half the price of Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs. For many visitors it is the best value of the medina monuments. The courtyard is the main reason to go, so the earlier you arrive, the better.

What actually changes the price

Only one price for adults

The official site lists a single adult price of 50 MAD, which makes this site simpler than the ministry monuments that charge foreigners 100 MAD.

Group tickets

Parties of more than 20 people pay a lower rate per person, which matters for tour operators more than independent visitors.

Resellers and tours

Online listings that mention the madrasa are usually guided tours that include admission. The price is for the guide, and the ticket is a small part of it.

What to expect

The entrance is on Rue Assouel, a few metres before the Ben Youssef Mosque. If you reach the mosque, you have gone slightly too far.

You pay at a small window inside the door, then walk into a dark corridor that opens onto the courtyard. The pool in the middle reflects the carved arches, and the upper galleries lead to the student cells.

The cells are small, bare rooms with narrow windows, and they show how students actually lived. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour, longer if they photograph the courtyard from several angles.

Before you book

Arrive at 9:00. The courtyard is quiet for about the first hour. After that it fills with groups and the photos are harder.

Bring cash. The ticket window takes cash only, so carry 50 MAD notes for each adult.

Plan the nearby sites together. The Marrakech Museum and the Almoravid Koubba are close by. They have their own tickets, so ask at each entrance about the current price.
